RUDN University hosts the XX seminar-conference of Project 5-100


During three days the representatives of Russian and foreign professional community will discuss current challenges, best practice and latest trends in the ambit of higher education. Project 5-100 has been organizing quarterly seminar-conferences since 2013. These seminars represent the main Russian forum devoted to the strategic development, international promotion and transformation of Russian universities into world-class institutions.

The program opened with a plenary session devoted to the best practices, the results and plans of Project 5-100and featured Lyudmila Ogorodova, Deputy Minister of Education and Science of Russia among the key speakers.

Now we are on the halfway of Project 5-100 fulfillment. We believe that the second half will be efficient given our accurate performance of the first one”, said  in her welcoming address Deputy Minister. 

Lyudmila Ogorodova expressed the interest of the Ministry in qualitative development of universities and noted an importance of maximizing competitiveness of tertiary institutions on the global market of educational services, scientific and research capacity building, and improving quality of scientific publications in high-profile special editions. Moreover she drew attention of Project 5-100 participators to the  importance of university’s  academic reputation of university within scientific community.  

Assessing the dynamics of Universities in the ratings and rankings, Lyudmila Ogorodova emphasized the need to expand the scientific areas according to which universities are included in the ratings: "This year, the universities participating in  Project 5-100 demonstrated the best results in rankings compared to those of the last year. We have traditionally strong positions in the physics, mathematics and socio-humanistic sciences". Deputy Minister stressed the importance for universities to feature in the top places and boasting the world’s 53d best placements   not only in subject rakings  , according to which the Project 5-100 Universities have already achieved impressive results, but also in  general ones.”

2017 QS world university rankings by subject show the number of top-placements increase by universities participating in  Project 5-100. If in 2016 it included only 9 universities, in 2017 its number increased to 15. Three Project 5-100 universities were able to enter the top 50. Two other universities entered the top 100 based on their achievements in and university performance across four subjects. Project 5-100 contributes Russian universities recording world-leading performance and confidence in Russia institutions.

At the plenary session the RUDN team led by the rector Vladimir Filippov presented university’s best practices. According to Mr. Filippov, one of the main challenges facing the university is its multidisciplinary character: "With the selected 5-6 priority areas within the Project 5-100, RUDN being the most versatile and comprehensive university in this country is to implement other 90% of training courses at an internationally accepted level." Vladimir Filippov introduced a proposal to develop jointly with the Ministry of Education and Science of Russia and the Ministry of Labor of Russia a tutoring system in universities, mechanisms for tutoring and supporting students.

Larisa Efremova RUDN Vice-Rector for international academic mobility focused her presentation mainly  on analysis of practical-oriented cases on attracting and recruiting foreign students. The same topic, but with an emphasis on further vocational training, was voiced in the report by Angela Dolzhikova, Vice-Rector for  continuing education, who emphasized: "The participation of the RUDN in Project 5-100 since its initiation had a significant impact on the internationalization and diversification of the educational products through the additional education system of the university".


The seminar was continued by the strategic session "Breakthrough Technologies of Biomedicine", the main themes of which were breakthrough scientific areas, translational medicine and the role of alliances and consortia of  Project 5-100 Universities with medical institutions and business as effective forms of its implementation. The session was opened by Lyudmila Ogorodova, who drew attention of the participants to the growing interest in translational medicine in the world, which, she noted, has translated into  a new field of scientific research, which is in  urgent need of university training. The speakers paid attention to the discussion of interdisciplinary educational programs in the field of biomedicine, the role of the universities participating in Project 5-100 as centers of excellence. For example, the rector of the National Research Nuclear University ‘MEPhI’ Mikhail Strikhanov highlighted in his address: "Project 5-100 had created a very useful dynamic and gave a powerful impetus to the further development of universities – in all areas of their activities- providing a significant boost that we are discussing today. "

Alexander Sobolev, Director of the Department of State Policy in Higher Education of the Ministry of Education and Science of the Russian Federation, moderated a roundtable on the implementation of the Bologna Process tools in the Russian higher education system. The discussion was also attended by Lyudmila Ogorodova, who spoke about  constant work to bring the country into the European higher education space and Russia's institutions participation in it.

The main topic of discussion that unfolded during the round table on the professional qualifications was the formation of a national system for the qualifications development in higher education. The meeting was moderated by Svetlana Parfenova, First Deputy Director of  the Russian Research Institute of Economics (RIEP).

During the conference, meetings of the working groups of the Association "Global Universities" were held. The meetings were dedicated to the strategy of creating an ‘English-speaking environment’, personnel reserve, scientific research in the university environment and promotion of research results.

RUDN, as host party of the event, organize a traditional tour on campus and visits to the leading laboratories and centers for the seminar participants.

The first day of the XX seminar-conference of the Project 5-100 became an effective platform for serious discussion. In the next two days the seminar participants are expected to witness about 15 sections, in which leading world experts from the largest foreign rating agencies: THE and QS, international educational companies and associations, as well as to assist at the Science Slam, when 5 students from the leading universities will present their research in an 10 minute entertaining performance, and follow live Project 5-100 universities’ discussion with international students in the official group StudyInRussia on VK social network, and much more.
